The 7 Best Varsity Football Helmets of 2026
Every helmet on this list earned Virginia Tech's top 5-star rating. The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab's 2026 Edition evaluated 40 varsity football helmets, the adult-sized helmets worn from high school up. It ran 48 lab impacts on each one to measure both linear and rotational head acceleration, then scored every helmet on concussion risk. A lower score means better protection. These are the seven best, ranked by their actual scores.
LIGHT makes two of the seven, including #1. The rankings are Virginia Tech's, not ours, and we link their full list so you can check every number. That's how independent testing works: you don't get to pick your results.
How to read the scores: The top three (0.46, 0.50, 0.52) are separated by hundredths, then there's a clear jump to 0.68 and up. All seven are excellent. The top three are a tier of their own, and they range from $649 to $1,199.99.
1. LIGHT Apache: 5★, score 0.46 · $649
The best-scoring varsity helmet in Virginia Tech's 2026 Edition, out of 40 tested. It's also the cheapest helmet in the top three by a wide margin: the #2 helmet costs nearly twice as much. It's built on a flexible nylon shell, 3D printed interior liner, and designed to stay light.
2. Riddell Axiom 3D: 5★, score 0.50 · $1,199.99
Riddell's newest submission and some call it their new flagship. If your program is standardized on Riddell and budget isn't the constraint, this is the one to get. It's also the most expensive helmet in the top seven.
3. VICIS ZERO2 Trench: 5★, score 0.52 · $859
VICIS's lineman-focused version of the ZERO2, built on their deformable outer shell, which gives on impact before force reaches the head (same as the LIGHT Apache). It rounds out a very tight top three.
4. Xenith Orbit Pro: 5★, score 0.68 · $995
Xenith's top model and the first helmet in the second scoring tier.
5. LIGHT Gladiator ATK: 5★, score 0.71 · $995
LIGHT's second entry in the top seven, and a step up from the original Gladiator.
6. VICIS ZERO2: 5★, score 0.73 · $759
The standard ZERO2, and one of the more affordable ways into the top seven.
7. Schutt F7 LTD: 5★, score 0.75 · $975
Schutt's best-scoring varsity helmet in 2026, using the F7 platform's external Tektonic plates to manage rotational force.

The best 5-star varsity helmets under $500
Only three helmets on Virginia Tech's 2026 list hold a full 5-star rating for under $500:
-
LIGHT Apache Tomahawk: 5★, score 1.13 · $299. The least expensive 5-star varsity helmet Virginia Tech tested in 2026.
-
LIGHT Apache Lightning: 5★, score 0.93 · $449. A better score than the Tomahawk for $150 more.
-
Riddell SpeedFlex Diamond: 5★, score 1.69 · $499.99. The lowest-cost 5-star route into the Riddell SpeedFlex family.
For comparison, the most expensive helmet on the whole list, the Riddell Precision-Fit at $1,700, scores 3.23 and rates 3 stars. Price and protection are not the same thing.
How to actually choose
Aim for 5 stars. Virginia Tech recommends choosing a helmet rated 4 or 5 stars. Of the 40 varsity helmets tested, 15 earned 5 stars.
Then let fit decide. Between two 5-star helmets, the one that fits correctly is the safer helmet. Measure first, run the fit checks before the first practice, or book a virtual fitting.
Consider weight. A varsity player wears that helmet for every rep of every practice. A lighter helmet means less neck fatigue and better head position late in games.
Varsity helmet FAQ
What is the #1 rated varsity football helmet in 2026?
The LIGHT Apache, with a score of 0.46 in Virginia Tech's 2026 Edition, the best of the 40 varsity helmets tested. The Riddell Axiom 3D is second at 0.50, and the VICIS ZERO2 Trench is third at 0.52.
Is a varsity helmet the same as an adult football helmet?
Yes. "Varsity" is the industry term for adult-sized football helmets, worn in high school, college and adult leagues. Virginia Tech rates them separately from youth helmets.
What is the cheapest 5-star varsity football helmet?
The LIGHT Apache Tomahawk, at $299 (Virginia Tech's listed cost), is the least expensive varsity helmet with a 5-star rating in the 2026 Edition.
Do more expensive football helmets protect better?
Not necessarily. The #1 helmet costs $649, about half the price of #2, and the most expensive helmet on Virginia Tech's list ($1,700) earns 3 stars.
How many stars should a high school football helmet have?
Virginia Tech recommends a helmet rated 4 or 5 stars. Anything below that carries measurably higher concussion risk in their testing.
Are Virginia Tech's helmet ratings independent?
Yes. The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab tests and scores helmets in its own laboratory and publishes the full results, including every helmet's score and cost.
How often does a varsity helmet need reconditioning?
Helmets need periodic professional reconditioning and recertification, at least every 2 years, and they have a maximum service life. See our reconditioning guide.
