WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "YOUTH" AND "VARSITY" HELMET?
According to National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), a youth football helmet is designed for players competing below the high school level — such as Pop Warner, middle school, or junior programs.
A varsity football helmet is intended for athletes at the high school level and above, including college and professional leagues like the CFL and NFL.
HOW IS ARE LIGHT HELMETS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FOOTBALL HELMETS?
The LIGHT Helmet stands out from other football helmets in several key ways. Firstly, it is up to 50% lighter than traditional helmets. This reduction in weight helps to minimize the force sustained by a player during impacts, ultimately reducing the risk of injury.
Secondly, our helmets are designed with safety as the top priority. ALL OF OUR HELMETS ARE TOP-RANKED BY THE INDEPENDENT HELMET LABS AT VIRGINIA TECH, WITH THE LIGHT APACHE AND APACHE APACHE LIGHTNING RATED AS THE MOST PROTECTIVE HELMETS FOR VARSITY AND YOUTH TACKLE FOOTBALL.
Additionally, our EXTENSIVE LINE OF helmets FEATURE EXCLUSIVE NEXT-GENERATION TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS VARIABLE-STIFFNESS 3D-PRINTED PODS, EPP IMPACT FOAM LINING, ULTRA-FLEXIBLE NYLON SHELLS, and CHROMOLY STEEL FACEMASKS THAT ALL HELP REDUCE WEIGHT WITHOUT SACRIFICING PROTECTION.
Lastly, our helmets HAVE FULLY ADJUSTABLE INTERIORS, allowing for a CUSTOM fit for each athlete. This not only enhances comfort but also ensures optimal safety AND REDUCES DISTRACTIONS on the field.
Overall, the LIGHT Helmet offers unmatched lightweight design, superior protection, and customizable features, making it the top choice for athletes seeking the best in football helmet technology. Can I wear an Apache if I am a youth player?
Short answer: NO. The LIGHT Apache was engineered for the speed and impacts that commonly occur in highschool and college football, meaning the internal stiffness of the helmet was built specifically for bigger and faster players.
Additionally, starting in September of 2027, NOCSAE will limit all helmets for youth players to under 3.5 lbs. The Apache is not certifed to this specific NOCSAE standard because it is a varsity-only helmet model, meaning many leagues and teams will not permit the use of the Apache.
We strongly encourage you to consider purchasing a certified youth helmet, such as the #1-rated Apache Lightning Youth or Apache Tomahawk Youth, which are specifically designed to provide the best protection for youth athletes, and certified for the forthcoming 2027 NOCSAE Weight Standards.

What is the difference between the LS2 Youth Composite and the LS2 Youth Polycarbonate?
The primary difference between the LS2 Youth Composite and the LS2 Youth Polycarbonate helmets lies in the shell material. They also come equipped with a chromoly steel face mask and offer adjustability and customization options. However, the LS2 COMPOSITE helmet is approximately two ounces lighter than the polycarbonate model. This weight variance is due to the Polycarbonate helmet's use of more traditional materials, making it a more affordable option for athletes while still providing optimal protection.
Can I request a custom color for my helmet?
Yes, we offer custom color options for our helmets!
Although we use the standardized sportcoat system, it is important to note that we cannot guarantee an exact match without a paint sample.
If you have a specific color in mind, we can send you a paint match form to include with the sample. Please ensure to note the order number on the form for reference.
If you do not have a paint sample, you can still request a custom color. In this case, we ask that you confirm via email that you authorize us to produce the custom color without a sample. It's important to understand that there are no returns or refunds for custom colors once the order is confirmed.
